Detached family home with new windows and doors – Hale Windows And Doors

What kind of homes are in Hale?

Hale grew quickly after the railway arrived in the 1860s. Between then and the 1910s, builders put up large detached and semi-detached houses for families who worked in Manchester, first along Ashley Road and then on the leafy roads either side of it. Many of these houses show Arts and Crafts and Tudor Revival influences, with bays, tall chimneys, decorative timber and generous gardens. The gaps were filled between the wars with semis, short terraces and detached houses, and Hale has had a steady stream of modern executive homes and replacement houses since.

For windows and doors, that means three quite different jobs:

  • Victorian and Edwardian houses. Tall openings, bays and often original or replacement sash windows.
  • 1920s and 1930s houses. Bay windows, side doors and front doors with leaded or patterned glass. A composite door with a period glass design and a matching set of casement windows suits these well.
  • Modern and remodelled homes. Large openings to the garden, where bifold or patio doors are the main feature.

Do I need planning permission for new windows in Hale?

For most houses in Hale, no. Replacing windows and doors in a house is usually "permitted development" as long as the new ones look similar to the existing ones. Planning permission or consent is more likely to be needed if your home is a listed building, a flat, or covered by an Article 4 direction. Parts of Hale are in conservation areas, so we check your address before the survey.

Hale has three conservation areas designated by Trafford Council:

  • Hale Station Conservation Area (designated 1986, extended in 2015 to include Seddon Road and Heath Road). It covers the Ashley Road shops around the station and the surrounding residential streets.
  • South Hale Conservation Area (1986).
  • Ashley Heath Conservation Area (1974).

In a conservation area, the council's management plans ask for materials and designs that respect the character of the street, so a like-for-like look matters even when permission is not needed. If in doubt, check with Trafford Council's planning team before you order; we are happy to help you with the question.

All replacement windows must also meet Building Regulations.

Hale windows and doors: questions we are asked

Do you fit windows and doors in both WA14 and WA15?

Yes. Hale spans both postcode districts, and we cover all of it, along with Hale Barns, Altrincham, Bowdon and Timperley nearby.

My house is in the Hale Station conservation area. Can I still have uPVC windows?

Often, yes, provided the house is not listed and is not covered by an Article 4 direction, and the new windows look similar to the old ones. We check your address at the survey and can suggest styles that suit the street. If there is any doubt, we recommend confirming with Trafford Council's planning team before ordering.

Can you match the look of the original windows on a Victorian or Edwardian house in Hale?

We will show you samples at the survey.

How long does a full house of windows take in a larger Hale home?

It depends on the number and size of openings. We confirm the timing in your written quote.

Will you leave the house tidy?
